R. Lance Boldrey

Lance Boldrey was born and raised in Petoskey, Michigan, and spent his summers working at a marina on Lake Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations, with honors, from the James Madison College and the Honors College of Michigan State University. He then received a law degree from the Duke University School of Law.

Mr. Boldrey spent three years as an associate in the Government and Commerce department of a Lansing, Michigan, law firm before serving as an attorney and policy advisor to the Republican caucus of the Michigan House of Representatives and, briefly, as a campaign coordinator. From 1999 to 2002, he served as Deputy Legal Counsel to former Michigan Governor John Engler and was responsible for improving the state of Michigan’s relations with twelve federally recognized Indian tribes. He played a lead role in negotiations leading to comprehensive state-tribal tax agreements, a state-tribal accord, settlements of disputes over tribal gaming, and a consent decree governing state and tribal fishing activities in much of the Great Lakes. Mr. Boldrey also oversaw census and redistricting efforts, litigation concerning state constitutional issues, and homeland security and emergency management matters.

Mr. Boldrey now practices law in the Lansing and Washington, D.C., offices of Dykema Gossett, PLLC, a large Midwest law firm. He leads the firm’s Indian law team and focuses his practice on Indian law, with an emphasis on gaming, economic development, and state-tribal relations. Mr. Boldrey is also involved in drafting legislation, lobbying federal and state decision-makers in the legislature and executive branch, and litigating public policy and constitutional issues.

Mr. Boldrey is a past president of the James Madison College Alumni Association and a member of the Federalist Society and several bar associations. He is an avid skier and fan of Michigan State and Duke basketball and the Detroit Red Wings. He and his wife Angela reside in Lansing, Michigan.
