Matt James
Trustee Emeritus

Matt James is a senior vice president of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation where he directs the Foundation’s media and public education programs. James is responsible for approximately half of the Foundation’s operating programs and six of its operating divisions, including its health news and information service, kaisernetwork.org, its public opinion research program, media fellowship programs, and media partnerships with news and entertainment media organizations in the United States and around the globe. Mr. James also leads the development of the Foundation’s newest journalism initiative, Kaiser Health News, that launched in 2009.

Prior to joining the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, James spent 10 years working in Washington, D.C., as a senior communications and political aide to Congressman Morris K. Udall, Senator Dale Bumpers, and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He has also worked as an advisor and strategist on many national political campaigns.

In 1994, James was appointed by President Clinton to the Board of the Udall Foundation. He also serves as chair of the board of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and has served on the board of Grantmakers in Health, as well as on advisory committees for the Council on Foundations and Independent Sector.
