What if you never left your neighborhood?
Help us help more kids discover nature.

Although the natural environment is appreciated in the abstract, each generation seems to have less exposure to nature. To ensure that citizen stewards will continue to care for our natural heritage, young people need to be connected to nature in a compelling, individualized and hands-on way. The Foundation seeks to contribute to the vital effort of connecting and re-connecting youth with nature through Parks in Focus.

Parks in Focus helps disadvantaged middle school students interact with nature through the art of photography. Although each individual Parks in Focus trip might be small in scale (the number of students), the individual student's experience is unique and valuable. By increasing the number of trips, the total potential impact is significant.

Our immediate goal is to increase the annual number of Parks in Focus trips from three to 10 over the next two years.

Q: How many kids are out there? A: Nearly 5 million. We partner with local Boys and Girls clubs to help us choose trip participants. With 4,300 clubs and locations in all 50 states, the Boys and Girls clubs assists some 4.8 million youngsters.

Q: What's to see and discover? A: 84 million acres of natural beauty. There are nearly 400 national parks covering more than 84 million acres. We seek to share this national heritage. In addition, Parks in Focus trips go to wildlife refuges and other wild areas.

Q: How much do the trips cost? A: Approximately $10,000 per trip. The cost depends upon the number of kids, whether they are camping or in lodging, the number of days of the trip and the like.

Q: What would I be contributing to? A: A personal guide, many smiles and thousands of memories. Udall Scholarship alumni guide each trip. Participants learn about the natural world, digital photography and working in teams as well as individual responsibility. They also have fun. They take thousands of pictures, meet new kids and visit places they didn't know existed.
