Celebrating Our National Parks

The Legacy of Mo Udall

The National Park Service manages more than 84 million acres of land – a vast system of nearly 400 parks, monuments, and historic sites that include natural, recreational, and cultural areas that Mo Udall helped to create during his 30 years in Congress. Chief among his legislative accomplishments was the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, which doubled the size of the national park system. In fact, today the National Park Service manages 55 million acres in Alaska alone.

Parks in Focus celebrates this natural heritage by introducing under-privileged youth, many of whom have never before left their local communities, to our national parks and monuments. Participants have the opportunity to connect to the natural world in a way they haven't before, and they can capture and communicate their encounters through the lens of a camera. Look through the images captured by our 12-year-old participants, and you'll see our national parks they way they do: with joy, wonder, and the promise of a new adventure.

Place we have visited: National parks, monuments, recreation areas and lakeshores.
