Ashly is Hunkpapa Lakota from the Standing Rock Sioux Nation, Lithuanian, and French Canadian studying criminal justice and American Indian studies. She created One Step Forward, a student-led mentorship program, for Native high school students in her community. Serving as the President of Indian Studies Association, she coordinates a weeklong event to educate North Dakotans on contemporary and historical Native issues. A McNair Scholar, her undergraduate research studies the trends in Native communities with regard to the criminal justice system and recidivism. Focusing on criminal justice reform, she takes a bottom-up approach which analyzes community efforts first. She plans to pursue a doctorate in criminal justice or Indigenous studies.
